10 STUDENT-GOLFERS ARE WELL ABOVE PAR

The Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame won't hold its first tournament of the season until June, but the organization already has its big winners for 1994. And they never had to hit a shot.

Ten high school seniors recently were selected by the hall's scholarship committee from a record 26 applicants to receive a combined $10,500 in college aid.

Each applicant was evaluated in the following areas: academic achievement, financial need, citizenship and character, as well as a demonstrated interest in golf.

Doug Bramlett, a 17-year-old senior at Lord Botetourt, was the big winner, receiving the $6,000 - $1,500 for four years - Don Holliday Memorial Scholarship. Bramlett plans to attend Radford University in September.

The scholarship, which was increased from last year's $4,000 award, is named in honor of the late Don Holliday, a district sales manager for Piedmont Airlines.

The scholarship is funded almost entirely by a captain's choice tournament played each June. This year's tournament is June 25, with 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. shotgun starts at Hanging Rock. The seven previous tournaments have generated $72,000 in scholarship money.

Other winners:

Bryan Saunders of William Byrd won the $1,000 G. Buddy Clement Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of the late local golf ambassador.

Josh MacDermod of Roanoke Valley Christian won the $1,000 Gordon C. Willis Scholarship, named in honor of the 1992 Hall of Fame inductee.

Tim Moser of Salem and Ryan Antolini of Glenvar each won a $500 Phil Kistler Memorial Fund Scholarship, named in honor of the late physician-golf champion.

Ryan Ketron of William Byrd won the $300 King Family Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of the late members of the Blue Hills golfing family.

Northside's James Noon and Jason Booker, and William Byrd's Amy Hodge and Chris Turner each won a $300 Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame scholarship.

\ THAT'S THE TICKET: Because of overcrowding in April, Augusta National Golf Club has elected to limit the sale of practice-day tickets for the Masters.

An estimated 80,000 fans attended the Tuesday practice session, creating a major traffic jam around the club and long lines for bathrooms and concessions. As in the past, an unlimited number of tickets was sold at the gate.

Tickets for each of the three days of practice for the 1995 tournament - scheduled for April 3-9 - will be sold in advance by application. The applications will be accepted only by mail and cannot be postmarked before June 1. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices are $16 for the first two days and $21 for the third day. Successful applicants will be notified in August.

\ SELLOUT: All 22,500 daily and weeklong package tickets for the U.S. Open, scheduled for June 16-19 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club, have been sold.

\ A MOYERS' 4-PEAT?: Three-time defending champion Bob Moyers of New Market heads the field for the VSGA's Senior Stroke Play Championship to be played Monday and Tuesday at Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook.

Besides Fletcher, Roanoke's top threats include 1960 State Am champion Ned Baber and reigning Valley Amateur Seniors titlist Gibby Wingfield.

\ RADFORD RECRUITS: Virginia Beach's Jason Barba, winner of the 1992 Scott Robertson Memorial, heads a list of three signings recently announced by Radford University coach Steve Ames. Fitzgerald placed sixth for Stuarts Draft at the Group A state tournament in the fall.
