DIABETES BENEFIT WALKERS PREPARE

As Relay for Life walkers end their 24-hour fund-raiser for cancer, another group of walkers is gearing up for Sunday's Walk For The Cure.

Volunteers will walk the 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) course to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes research. This type of diabetes, where patients are insulin-dependant, affects an estimated one out of four families in this country, walk coordinator Beth Stanley said.

The band Bluegrass Revival will begin the event at noon in Roanoke's City Market.

Students from Huff Lane Elementary will present a 5-foot check to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The students raised more than $1,300 by walking around their school and by selling cardboard sneakers with their partner, the Kroger store on U.S. 460.

People can register until the the beginning of the walk, at 1 p.m.
