Salem Fire Capt. Pat Counts said gasoline in a canister had been kept in the storage room of 108 Hart Drive. A water heater's pilot light apparently ignited fumes from the can.
Counts said that as the weather becomes warmer, gasoline generates more fumes. "And most people don't realize that those fumes will seek out an ignition source."
No one was injured. The house sustained more than $25,000 damage, Counts said.
