PATRICK HENRY WINS TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

At River's Edge, Patrick Henry claimed its first Roanoke Valley District boys' tennis championship in five years by defeating Cave Spring 6-3. The Patriots got singles wins from Andrew Thomas, Greg McCray, Addams England and Hunter Carson, and wrapped up the victory with two doubles wins.

Patrick Henry will play in the Northwestern Region tournament May 23-25 at River's Edge.

Jeff Bourne scored three goals and Randy Blevins added two as George Wythe (5-9) bombed Glenvar 9-0 to win the Region C boys' soccer tournament.

Glenvar (1-14) reached the finals by edging James River 3-2 behind two goals from Kevin Solsby. The Maroons beat Giles 3-2 in the semifinals on goals from Randy Blevins, Jon Elliott and Jim Bob Hartlage. Jonathan St. Leger and Shane Meredith scored for Giles (4-10).

Roanoke Valley Christian won five singles matches on the way to beating Miller 5-4 in the team finals of the Virginia Independent Conference tennis tournament.

The Eagles (13-0) got singles victories from Hampton Pasley, Ben Thomas, Simon Foster, Jay Plemmons and Mark DeLong. Pasley, Foster, Plemmons and DeLong all finished the year unbeaten for Joe Surkamer's squad.

Chris Andres had seven saves in posting his fourth shutout of the season, as Patrick Henry completed the regular season by blanking Cave Spring 2-0 in a Roanoke Valley District boys' soccer match at River's Edge. Dutes Alexis and Jack Edwards each scored a goal for the Patriots (7-5-3 overall, 6-1-1 district). Cave Spring is 4-4-3 and 3-3-2.

Mary Jennings scored three goals and Emily Manetta recorded her eighth shutout as North Cross (9-7-1) shut out Stuart Hall 9-0 to win the Blue Ridge Conference girls' soccer tournament. Stuart Hall advanced to the championship game by beating Roanoke Catholic 4-1. Christy Hinman scored the Celtics' goal.

Jamie Bell scored two goals and Forrest Porterfield had a goal and an assist to lead North Cross (14-1-3) to a 6-1 victory over Miller in the championship game of the Virginia Independent Conference boys' soccer tournament. In the semifinals, the Raiders beat Roanoke Catholic 5-1 and Miller (10-3) edged Randolph-Macon 2-1.

Holy Cross defeated Roanoke Valley Christian 12-11 in eight innings to win the Blue Ridge Conference softball tournament championship in Lynchburg.

Amy Helton went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Roanoke Valley Christian (7-6) at the plate. Dana Hurt was 2-for-3 with one RBI.

To reach the title game, Roanoke Valley Christian beat Lynchburg Christian Academy 11-6. Hurt was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Elizabeth Clark was 2-for-3 with one RBI. In the other semifinal, Meredith Albers went 5-for-5 and drove in seven runs as Holy Cross defeated North Cross 17-10. Carolyn Jones and Lori Dodson each went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Raiders.

Lynchburg Christian Academy beat North Cross 11-1 in the third place game. Jamie Shepherd went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead LCA. North Cross finished the season 12-6 in the conference.
