ETC. SALEM TENNIS PLAYER WINS BLUE RIBBON DIVISION

Jeff Henley of Salem defeated Todd Williams of Lynchburg 6-2, 6-4 to win the boys' 18 division at the USTA-sanctioned Blue Ribbon Junior Tennis Championship in Martinsville.

In other matches involving local players, Natasha Belcher of Wise beat Armistead Lemon of Roanoke 6-2, 6-0 in the girls' 18 division final, and John Snead of Roanoke was forced to retire from the boys' 12 division final after he became ill.

In Springfield, Pulaski County senior Jennifer Pohlig won the 3,200-meter run at the Jim England Track and Field Invitational. She finished with a time of 11 minutes, 9.5 seconds.

The North Cross girls' tennis team defeated Stuart Hall 5-4 Saturday night in Lynchburg to win the Blue Ridge Conference tournament. The Raiders shut out Lynchburg Christian Academy 9-0 in a semifinal match. North Cross players Armistead Lemon, Heather Perry and Summers Mattern were chosen for the all-tournament team. Lemon and sister Ann Lemon also were selected to the all-conference team. Raiders coach Sherry Killam was voted conference coach of the year.
