HOKIE WINS METRO DECATHLON

Dave Hannett of Virginia Tech held off a surge by Virginia Commonwealth's David Norman to win the decathlon at the Metro Conference Track and Field Championships at Tulane University in New Orleans. Hannett finished with 6,671 points, eight points better than Norman.

Tech leads the men's competition with 26 points through two events. Competition was delayed because of rain earlier Sunday, delaying the completion of several field events until late Sunday night.

The Tech women won two events Sunday to move up from sixth place to second. Megan Barnes leaped 18 feet, 8 inches to win the long jump. Teammate Detra Edmunds finished fifth.

Hokie Michelle Smith finished first in the discus with a throw of 129-10. Nancy Gilmore finished third for Tech, and teammate Meredith Newby was fourth.

In other college sports:

In Hattiesburg, Miss., Tommy Davis had three hits, including a go-ahead RBI single, as Southern Mississippi beat Virginia Tech 5-4 in the regular-season finale for the Metro Conference baseball teams.

Southern Miss (34-22 overall, 11-7 conference), second in the final Metro standings, scored single runs in the fourth through seventh innings after trialing 2-1. Davis' hit in the fifth put the Golden Eagles ahead to stay.

Virginia Tech (38-23, 8-9) had its lead after Denny Hedspeth poked RBI singles in the second and fourth innings. The Hokies didn't score again until taking advantage of a Southern Miss error and a Sal Colangelo sacrifice fly to score twice in the ninth.

Virginia Tech, seeded sixth, will play third-seeded South Florida and the Golden Eagles will play Louisville in the first round of the Metro Conference tournament Wednesday at Louisville, Ky.

Jason Kasch's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Maryland-Baltimore County a 6-5 victory over Radford and a sweep of the three-game Big South Conference series.

Kasch was 3-for-4 for the Retrievers (23-21, 15-12). UMBC has won five straight and 11 of 14 games.

The Highlanders (26-26, 17-10) finish the season with six straight losses. Travis Toms (6-5) took the loss for Radford in relief.

Radford took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Duane Filchner. After UMBC tied the score, the Highlanders went ahead 4-2 in the fourth on RBI hits by Mike Hurt and Donnie Fields. The Retrievers answered by scoring in the fifth, sixth and seventh to lead 5-4.
