BUCHANAN MAN KILLS 2, THEN SELF DAUGHTER SERIOUSLY WOUNDED

A man shot his estranged wife, his daughter and another man in Buchanan on Sunday night, killing both adults and seriously injuring the 9-year-old before killing himself.

Sammy Petty, 48, of Buchanan shot Shelby Petty, 38, and Alisha Petty, both also of Buchanan, in a car outside the Moose Lodge in Buchanan shortly before 8 p.m., according to a report filed by Botetourt County Sheriff Reid Kelly.

The Sheriff's Office did not release the identity of the man killed in the car.

Petty apparently met his wife outside the lodge to pick up his daughter. An argument ensued and he fired into the car, killing Shelby Petty and her male companion and wounding his daughter in the stomach, according to the report.

Sammy Petty then drove about a mile before shooting himself inside his car.

Alisha Petty was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she was still in surgery at 12:30 a.m., according to Doris Correll, a nursing supervisor.

The incident apparently had no connection with the Moose Lodge. Some lodge members were inside, but none saw the shootings. One man, who the Sheriff's Office would not identify, recognized Sammy Petty as he fled.

The Sheriff's Office did not know whether Petty had been drinking, and saw no indication that the shootings were premeditated.
