EXECUTIVE CHOSEN FOR TECH AWARD

A General Dynamics executive who formerly served as executive vice president of Newport News Shipbuilding was named the recipient of Virginia Tech's 1994 University Distinguished Achievement Award during the weekend commencement.

James E. Turner Jr., an honors graduate in engineering from the Class of '56, was unanimously chosen by Tech's Board of Visitors. In a statement, the board said Turner had "distinguished himself with an illustrious career as engineer, manager, and executive with one of the nation's leading defense contractors."

Turner went to General Dynamics in 1991, and took his current post as head of the Electric Boat Division in April 1993. He is a native of Isle of Wight, and has served on both the Virginia Tech Foundation board and the Committee of 100 within the university's College of Engineering.

"During my career in shipbuilding, the value of the education I received at this outstanding institution has been validated may times over," Turner said in a statement, adding that he was "deeply honored."
