RADFORD SIGNS TOP S.C. PLAYER

Radford signed its third basketball player with all-state credentials this season when Chibi Johnson, a 6-foot-4 swingman from Denmark, S.C., inked with the Highlanders on Sunday, hours before the deadline for signing national letters-of-intent.

Johnson, the South Carolina Class A player of the year, is the third player to sign with Radford in the past month. The Highlanders signed five players during the fall and spring recruiting periods, filling all of their available scholarships for next season.

Virginia Tech's men and women lead their both divisions in the Metro Conference track and field championships at the McWilliams Track Complex at Tulane. The Tech men have 80 points after 10 events, two points ahead of South Florida. The Hokie women have 83 points 11 events, followed by Virginia Commonwealth with 78. Tech's Chris Sieben won the javelin with a throw of 205 feet, 8 inches and the Hokies' Wade Devenney was fourth (191-6). In the 1,500 meters, Tech sophomore Marshall Ferguson was third (3:56.81) and teammate Eric Parlette was seventh (4:00.63).

For the women, Tech freshman Detra Edmunds won the triple jump (38-51/2), Johli Carscallen was second in the shot put (41-31/4) just ahead of teammate Michelle Smith in third place (39-81/2).

Former Virginia running back Eric Fears has returned to UVa as head strength coach, taking the place of John Gamble, who resigned in March to become the Miami Dolphins' strength coach.

Jim Kite holds a two-stroke lead over Arman Fletcher of Roanoke and Don Foster of Salem after 18 holes of play in the Virginia State Golf Association Senior Stroke Championship at Water's Edge Country Club. Kite, of Wolftown, had two birdies and one bogey in firing a first-round 72.
