TEEN CHASED BY POLICE DIES

Jason Allen Bates, the 18-year-old who was critically injured when he crashed his car on Franklin Road Southwest as police pursued him, died Saturday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Bates, of the 1300 block of 2nd Street Southwest, was in the hospital's neurotrauma intensive care unit with severe head injuries, a nursing supervisor said.

Roanoke County police spotted a car speeding at Ogden and Electric roads at about 9:25p.m. on May11. The car also was weaving through traffic with its headlights off.

Police pursued the car on U.S. 220 at speeds up to 85mph.

At the Franklin Road exit, the car hit the guardrail several times and the driver, identified as Bates, was thrown through the passenger window. The car continued to travel about 300 feet before it crashed.

Roanoke police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
