FIRE GUTS LAKE HOME

Fire struck a rental home in the Smith Mountain Lake area during a severe electrical storm Sunday evening, destroying it and damaging two adjacent units.

The patio home, located in the Bernards Landing development, was gutted by the 7:30p.m. fire. Two other units attached to it sustained slight smoke and water damage.

An employee at the development's maintenance shop said a fire wall that separates the units prevented more severe damage.

No one was injured.

Firefighters from Scruggs and Burnt Chimney, and from fire boats on the lake, contained the blaze in about 45 minutes, said Claude Webster, Franklin County's director of public safety.

Webster tentatively ruled Monday that the fire was ignited by lightning during the storm.
