FLOYD WINS TENNIS TITLE

At Galax, Floyd County tooks top honors in Mountain Empire District boy's tennis. The Buffaloes were declared team champions based on regular-season records. In tournament play, Floyd County's Frankie Turpin won his second straight singles title by beating Paul Bowers of Galax 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the title match. In the semifinals, Turpin beat Jason Borillo of Giles 6-3, 6-0 and Bowers defeated Narrows' Jay Webb 6-4, 6-4. In doubles, Floyd County's Turpin and John Boyd defeated Galax's Bowers and Stevie Grimes 6-3, 6-1. In semifinal play, Turpin and Boyd stopped Auburn's Mike Dingus and David Wade 6-2, 6-2 while Bowers and Grimes downed Giles' Borillo and Russell Boweing 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
