`GOOD DOG' CERTIFICATION

Canine Good Citizen tests and Therapy Dogs International certifications are going to be given at the School of Veterinary Medicine on June 4, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Registration deadline is May 25.

Sponsored by the New River Valley Kennel Club, the examinations are open to all dogs, purebred or mixed breed. The Canine Good Citizen test contains 10 activities which illustrate a dog's training and manners in public and in the presence of other dogs and people. The testing is not competitive, and does not require that you or your dog perform with precision.

The Therapy Dogs International designation is often required by schools or nursing homes before a canine friend is allowed for pet therapy visits. Testing for TDI expands on the Canine Good Citizen events by adding people on crutches or in wheelchairs and some crowd exercises.

Cost for the Canine Good Citizen test is $7. The TDI test is $9. All activities are performed on leash, and all participants must present a current rabies certificate.
