Roanoke Electric Steel Corp., a Roanoke producer of speciality steel products, on Tuesday reported earnings of $1.4 million, or 27 cents per share, for its second quarter ended April 30. That's a 52 percent increase from the year-earlier $949,242, or 18 cents per share. Sales were $50.6 million, up 23 percent from $40.9 million in the 1993 quarter.
For its first half-year, Roanoke Electric Steel said earnings rose 279 percent to $5.7 million, or $1.05 a share, on sales of $97.3 million, up 26 percent.
Hills Stores
Hills Stores Co., Canton, Mass., retailer operating discount stores in the Roanoke Valley, reported a net loss of $2.4 million but operating earnings of $6.4 million in its first quarter ended April 30. That compares to year-earlier loss of $11.7 million on an operating loss of $5 million. Net sales rose to $365.6 million from year-earlier $340.4 million.
Goody's Family Clothing
Goody's Family Clothing Inc., Knoxville, Tenn., retailer with stores in Western Virginia, said earnings for the quarter ended April 30 were up 22 percent to $2.8 million, or 17 cents per share, from $2.3 million, or 14 cents, a year ago. Sales were $124.3 million, a 29 percent increase.
Westmoreland Coal
Westmoreland Coal Co., Philadelphia-based producer and marketer of coal with operations in Western Virginia, reported a net loss of $4.8 million, equal to 86 cents per share, for the first quarter. That compares with a loss of $2.7 million, or 57 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenues for the quarter were $98.2 million, down from $114.3 million a year ago.
