TUCK TO BE REAPPOINTED TO PULASKI COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

Dr. Nathan Tuck will be confirmed next Monday by the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors for reappointment to the Massie District seat on the School Board.

The supervisors held a hearing for Monday night to receive nominations for Tuck's post, and Tuck, who owns chiropractic clinics in Pulaski, Fairlawn, Christiansburg and Galax, was the only nominee.

The appointment will not be for a full term, however. It will expire at the end of 1995. Pulaski County voters will choose members in November of that year for terms starting in 1996, under a referendum approved several years ago switching from supervisor appointments to direct election.

In a letter seeking reappointment through 1995, Tuck told the supervisors that the School Board is facing some challenging issues. ``I feel that I can help the board meet those challenges through the experience and educational process that I have gone through during the past 12 years,'' he said.

Tuck served first as a representative from the Draper District, and stepped down when he moved to another home in the Massie District. When a vacancy occurred in that district, he was named to fill it.

Tuck, 41, is a Roanoke native and a 1970 graduate of Cave Spring High School. He graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1974 and the National College of Chiropractic in 1978, with honors both times. He and his wife, Barbara, have three children, two of whom are still in county schools.

Dr. Carol Pratt, a Pulaski County dentist, placed Tuck's name before the supervisors.

No further names were offered, and none can be unless the supervisors decide to schedule a second public hearing. Instead, they agreed to make the appointment at their next meeting scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday in the Pulaski County High School Commons.

Although Tuck is the only candidate for the School Board seat, the supervisors will interview him Monday night before officially appointing him.

They also are scheduled to adopt the 1994-95 county budget at that meeting, which will follow a dinner in the recently completed shell for the Cougar Fitness Center at the school. The dinner will mark the kickoff of fund raising for the next phase of the project, equipping the center in time for it to be operational in the coming school year.

Next year's proposed county budget totals $39.8 million, up from the current $37.6 million, but with no changes in tax rates. The proposed budget for the school system would go from $15.8 million this year to nearly $16.5 million, though an increase in state funds.
