KITE FLIES TO VSGA SENIOR TITLE

Jim Kite of Wolftown fired a 4-over-par 76 in swirling winds to win his second VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship on Tuesday at Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook.

Kite's 4-over 148 total for two rounds on the 6,225-yard Smith Mountain Lake course was one shot better than runner-up Don Foster of Salem. Foster, the 1992 Valley Amateur champion making his Seniors debut, had a 75 on Tuesday.

Three-time defending champion Bob Moyers of New Market rallied with the day's best round (73) to take third at 151. Moyers entered the day six shots back after a first-round 78.

Robert Oakes of Salem tied for sixth at 154. Roanokers Ned Baber and Gib Wingfield each finished in a tie for 12th in the 108-player field at 156. Lexington's Tommy Baker also shot 156.

Former champion Arman Fletcher of Roanoke skied to a final-round 83 and finished in a tie for 16th at 157.

In other sports in the region:

nVirginia Tech third baseman Bo Durkac was named to the first-team All-Metro Conference baseball team, and Hokies reliever Charlie Gillian was named to the second team.

Southern Mississippi first baseman Tommy Davis earned player of the year honors, and North Carolina-Charlotte freshman pitcher Mark Roberts was named newcomer of the year. UNC Charlotte's Loren Hibbs was named coach of the year.

Durkac, a second-team selection and Metro newcomer of the year in 1993, is second in the Metro and 14th nationally in doubles with 21.

nMark Hairston, Patrick Henry High School's baseball coach for four seasons, has submitted his resignation effective at the end of the school year.

Hairston cited several personal reasons for making the decision, but he will remain as a teacher of physical education at Patrick Henry.

Hairston, a native of Brooklyn and a graduate of West Virginia State where he played baseball and basketball, was unable to make the PH program competitive for the top spot in the Roanoke Valley District. However, it was his decision to resign and he says he had no problems with members of the team.

This year, PH was 3-13 overall and 3-7 in the district with two games remaining on the schedule.

nIn Greenville, S.C., eighth-seeded Maryland scored seven runs in its final two innings to beat ninth-seeded Virginia, 8-2 in the play-in game of the annual Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

The loss ends Virginia's season at 20-34. The Cavaliers won just two of 25 games against ACC competition this season and lost all four of their meetings with Maryland.
