FELTY'S GOAL GIVES PATRIOTS VICTORY

Nathan Felty scored the winning goal with 15 minutes left, lifting top-seeded Patrick Henry to a 3-2 victory over William Fleming in a semifinal of the Roanoke Valley District Tournament in Rocky Mount.

The Patriots (9-5-3) will play Cave Spring, a 2-0 winner over Franklin County on Tuesday night, in today's final.

Jack Edwards and Jessie Dunker scored the other goals for PH. Edwards also had two assists.

In the other semifinal, Cave Spring goalie Justin Brittle made 13 saves as the Knights (4-5-4) advanced. Keith Cox scored on a first-half penalty kick and Brian Sharp scored in the second half on an assist from Frank Caldwell.

In other high school sports Tuesday:

BASEBALL:In Low Moor, Rick Eubanks, Seth Moore and Brian Crosswhite each had two hits as Salem outscored Alleghany 10-7 in the Blue Ridge District. The Spartans rallied for six runs in the third on five singles to take command.

nAt Maher Field, Mike Price's relief pitching helped Cave Spring nip Patrick Henry 4-3 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Price relieved starter Robey Caldwell with one out and runners on first and second in the sixth inning and got the last five outs without giving up a run.

nIn New Castle, Curtis Nowlin and Greg Boothe each had two hits as James River held off Craig County 6-5 in the Pioneer District. Zach Sowers was 3-for-3 and Chris Blankenship had a two-run double for Craig.

nBilly Arthur fired a three-hitter, striking out 14 in Lord Botetourt's 3-1 Blue Ridge District victory over Northside. Mark Freeland was the tough-luck loser for the Vikings, holding the Cavaliers to four hits. All four runs in the game were unearned.

nIn Lexington, William Byrd rallied from a three-run deficit to stay unbeaten with a 9-3 victory over Rockbridge County in a Blue Ridge District game. Rockbridge (7-10 overall, 3-6 in the district) led 3-0 before the Terriers scored six runs in the third inning on four hits and three Wildcats errors. Shannon Gray's two-run homer put Byrd (17-0, 9-0) ahead for good. Gray was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Chris Spraker was 3-for-4 with three RBI.

BOYS' TENNIS:Glenvar's Nick Varney won the singles and doubles titles -beating teammate Josh Williamson in singles, pairing with him in doubles - in the Pioneer District tournament at Glenvar High School. Varney and Williamson advance to the Region C tournament Tuesday at George Wythe High School. Varney won 6-2, 6-2 in singles, and he and Williamson beat Scott Deyo and Brian Marlatt of Parry McCluer 6-1, 6-0 in doubles.

SOFTBALL:In Daleville, Jessica Thompson scattered two hits and struck out six to lead Lord Botetourt to a 6-3 victory over Northside in the Blue Ridge District.

nWilliam Byrd smothered winless Rockbridge County 19-1 to clinch the Blue Ridge District championship and earn a Region III berth.

nShelly King drove in five runs as Patrick Henry routed William Fleming 18-3 in a Roanoke Valley District matchup.
