RADFORD DROPS DEMOMS

Casey Underwood scored at the 53-second mark of the third five-minute overtime period, lifting Radford to a 1-0 win over Christiansburg in the semifinal round of the New River District boys' soccer tournament Tuesday at Blacksburg.

In other boys' soccer:

Nathan Felty scored the winning goal with 15 minutes left, lifting top-seeded Patrick Henry to a 3-2 victory over William Fleming in the semifinals of the Roanoke Valley District Tournament at Rocky Mount. PH (9-5-3) will play Cave Spring in today's final.

In Rocky Mount, goalie Justin Brittle had 13 saves as Cave Spring beat Franklin County 2-0 in a Roanoke Valley District tournament semifinal. Cave Spring is 4-5-4.

BASEBALL: In Hillsville, Carroll County got three home runs in an 11-3 rout of Blacksburg in a New River District game. Jason Kilbourne and Ray Briggs had two-run shots for Carroll (14-3 overall, 5-1 in the district) and Willie Bryant had a solo homer.

In Rocky Mount, a six-run fourth inning carried Franklin County past Pulaski County 7-5 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Franklin County (12-4 overall, 10-1 in the district) trailed 4-1 entering the fourth. Justin Sigmon's bases-loaded triple tied the game, and Isaac Medeiros' RBI single put the Eagles ahead. Riley Hodges' two-run, inside-the-park home run ended the scoring. Pulaski is 6-10 and 2-8.

In Shawsville, Tony Maxey pitched a complete-game 2-hitter, leading the Shawnees to an 11-1 Mountain Empire District win over Fort Chiswell. Maxey (5-2) contributed to his own cause, collecting two hits at the plate. Kevin Mann and Mark Akers also had two hits for Shawsville (11-7, 5-4).

In Radford, Byron Gates had a solo homer and Denny Self had a double and two RBI, leading Christiansburg to a 9-3 New River District triumph over Radford. Both teams are 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the district.

In New Castle, Curtis Nowlin and Greg Boothe each had two hits as James River held off Craig County 6-5 in the Pioneer District. Zach Sowers was 3-for3 and Chris Blankenship had a two-run double for Craig.

GIRLS TENNIS:At Riner, Giles' Heidi Guthrie won the Mountain Empire District singles championship at Auburn High School. Guthrie won 7-5, 7-6 over Grayson County's Jessica Sumner, who teamed with Jenny Reedy to win the doubles title.

SOFTBALL: Amy Popik had three hits and knocked in three runs, pacing the Knights past the visiting Eagles in the Roanoke Valley District. Shannon Smithson was 3-for-5 and Christy Clifton 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Knights.
