Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., retailer with operations in Western Virginia, reported net income of $498.46 million, or 22 cents per share, for the quarter ended April 30, up from $450.65 million, or 20 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales for the recent period were $17.69 billion, up 27 percent over $13.92 billion a year earlier.
Woolworth Corp.
Woolworth Corp., New York retailer operating F.W. Woolworth, Champs Sports, Foot Locker and Lady Foot Locker stores in the Roanoke Valley, reported a net loss of $38 million, or 29 cents per share, for its first quarter ended April 30. That compared with a net loss of $24 million, or 18 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenues for the 13-week quarter were $1.76 billion, down 18 percent from $2.14 billion in the 1993 quarter.
