CAVE SPRING TOPS PH

Princess Kemp threw a complete-game four-hitter and Beth Drombetta had three hits as Cave Spring (13-5, 7-2) wrapped up the Roanoke Valley District regular-season championship with an 8-1 win over Patrick Henry on Wednesday.

Ellen Jamison and Sharon Vest had two hits for the Knights. Allison Suggs had a pair of hits and doubled home the Patriots' only run.

The RVD tournament will be played Wednesday at Franklin County.

In Wednesday's other softball games:

Freshman Amy Layman struck out 12 batters in five innings to help Glenvar defeat Covington 19-1 in a Pioneer District game at Glenvar. Stacy Shelor was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBI for the Highlanders (11-6-1, 8-2), who clinched a tie for first place in the district.

Craig County and Bath County split a pair of close Pioneer District games in Hot Springs.

The Rockets held off the Chargers for a 12-11 victory in the first game. Jennifer Caldwell struck out three in five innings to earn the win.

In the second game, Bath County's Michelle Woodzell (3-10) struck out 14 in five innings as the Chargers won 8-7. Jenny Deeds was 3-for-3 with three runs scored for Bath (4-12, 2-7).

Becky Mays doubled in the winning run in the top of the eighth to send Amherst past Liberty 5-4 in a Seminole District game at Bedford.

Mays led the Lancers (14-5) with two hits. For Liberty (13-5), Melissa Dooley and Lisa Carr had three hits each.

BASEBALL: Radford's Matt Linkous was 4-for-4 with a home run and improved to 3-0 on the mound with four innings of work as the Bobcats downed Lord Botetourt 10-6 at home. Radford (9-10) got three hits from Foster Ridpath and run-scoring triples from Lyle Morton and Jason Woolwine.

Scott Lynch went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI as Franklin County defeated Heritage 8-5 in a non-district baseball game at Lynchburg. Pitcher Freddy McGhee pitched a five-hitter, went 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Eagles (13-4). Teammate Riley Hodges was hit by a pitch and went 1-for-1 with two base on balls and one RBI. Pitcher Jason Roberts went 1-for-2 with an RBI for Heritage.

At Moneta, Staunton River beat Brookville 4-1 behind a seven-strikeout, complete-game effort from Jeff Hill (3-2). Dwight Orange and Jason Morgan had two hits for the Golden Eagles (8-10). Brookville is 14-4.

GIRLS' SOCCER: At Rocky Mount, freshman Margaret Hunter Turner scored unassisted 20 minutes into the first half to give Patrick Henry a 1-0 win over Cave Spring in the championship game of the Roanoke Valley District tournament.

Shannon Groves had 14 saves and earned the shutout in goal for the Patriots (15-0, 3-0) who will host a regional game on Monday against a team from northern Virginia to be announced.

BOYS' SOCCER: At Rocky Mount, Patrick Henry put the finishing touches on a big week by edging Cave Spring 1-0 in the finals of the Roanoke Valley District tournament. Asheley Kinsey scored the lone goal of the match midway through the first half, then the Patriots relied on the defensive play of sweeper Cannon Helscher and goalkeeper Kris Andres, who posted his sixth shutout.

Patrick Henry (10-5-3) won the regular-season title by beating Franklin County in a playoff on Monday and will host a first-round Northwestern Region tournament game against the No. 2 team from the Cardinal District.

Cave Spring (5-5-3) travels to the Cardinal's top seed on Monday for a regional game.

At Daleville, Andy McCaskill scored three goals and William Byrd roared past Rockbridge County 9-0 in the semifinals of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Michael Berry scored twice for the Terriers, who outshot the Wildcats 45-3.

In the other Blue Ridge semifinal, Owen Woodward had a pair of goals and Spartan goalkeeper Brad Moser recorded 12 saves in a 5-1 win over Northside.

Salem and William Byrd play for the tournament title today at 7 p.m. at Lord Botetourt. Both teams will advance to next week's Region III tournament.
