Many customers as well as employees already use the shorter name. "The marketplace effectively made this change for us some time ago,'' said Walter Rugaber, the newspaper's publisher. "We're just catching up with reality."

The Roanoke Times & World-News name came into existence in 1976 when the newspaper began merging the staffs of its morning edition - The Roanoke Times - and the afternoon edition - The World-News. The afternoon edition ceased in November, 1991.
