BUSINESSMAN WOOD DIES AT AGE 85

W. Howard Wood, a Roanoke businessman and early proponent of revitalizing the Roanoke City Market, died Tuesday at 85.

Wood, a native of Roanoke, was owner and president of Turner Drug Co., M.J. Patsel Drug Co. and Retail Delivery Service, as well as vice president of Woods Ace Hardware.

As early as 1964 Wood advocated renovation of the City Market to make it a tourist attraction. He was chairman of a City Market Improvement Committee and recommended better street lighting, repairing streets and sidewalks and cleaning and painting buildings.

He was an organizer and president of the Market Association, a past president of Downtown Roanoke Inc., and co-founder and former president and board member of Hidden Valley Country Club.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
