S.C. COLLEGE DOESN'T WANT MILITARY PLAN

The president of Columbia College told a federal judge Thursday that the school is not interested in creating a military-style leadership training program like that proposed at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia.

``It would be inconsistent with the history, mission and strategic plan for the future at Columbia College,'' Peter Mitchell testified during Shannon Faulkner's lawsuit to join the all-male corps of cadets at The Citadel.

But Mitchell said the college board has not ruled out working in other ways to expand single-sex education opportunities for women in South Carolina.

The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute are the only two all-male, state supported military colleges in the nation. The admissions policies of both are under attack in the federal courts.

A federal judge in Virginia has approved a VMI plan to remain all-male by creating a women's training program at Mary Baldwin.

But Mitchell said the board of Columbia College, a Methodist all-women's college with an enrollment of 1,236 in Columbia, S.C., wants to keep its emphasis on religious and personal values.

``Any plan that would jeopardize that would be of no interest,'' he said.

A state study committee has found there was no demand for a separate state women's college in South Carolina.
