The society was organized in 1979 by Roanoke artists John Will Creasy and Ernest Johnson. Its goals are to create opportunities for beginning and established artists to advance their skills, and to educate the public.
Tom Butterfield, director of the Perspective Gallery, said the exhibition is in keeping with the gallery's mission to provide a broad-based exhibit program, including local, national and international shows, and to support the arts in Virginia.
The show will be on display during the gallery's regular hours through June 23. On Saturday, the gallery will open from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. A reception will be held at 5:30.
In addition, the Armory Art Gallery, operated by Virginia Tech's art and art history department, will display paintings by 24 water media painters from the New River and Roanoke valleys through June 4. The Armory Art Gallery is on Draper Road and Jackson Street in downtown Blacksburg.
Artists from across the state will attend the opening events this weekend.
A slide lecture, presented by juror Louise Cadillac, is open to the public at no charge and will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the west-end dining room of Owens Hall. Cadillac, an artist, critic and juror, has won more than 40 national awards.
Regular hours for the Perspective gallery are noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Armory Art Gallery is normally open from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
