NEW RIVER PEOPLE

ROBERT MILLS, an architect with the Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, recently won a community service award from the chapter. Blacksburg Mayor ROGER HEDGEPETH received an award of distinction and Virginia Tech student CARL D'SILVA received an award for his work in design.

Country Western dance instructor TINA HICKS and her competition dance partner WAYNE CLEVENGER competed in the Eastern U.S. Invitational National Country Western Dance competition in Reston. They placed fourth overall in their category and took home trophies in two-step, waltz and polka.

Graduation was held for the Radford City School of Practical Nursing last month. Graduates included LINDA BAKER, SUSAN DULANEY, REBECCA FRANKLIN, JENNIFER HAMILTON, BETSY HODGE, MICHAEL JARRELL, DARLA KERR, POLLY LINKOUS, SHIRLEY OWENS, DAVID REYNOLDS, MAGGIE SADLER, SANDRA SOWERS, DEBORAH TAYLOR and ELIZABETH TAYLOR.

RONALD SECRIST of Blacksburg was among the graduating class of the 17th Annual Virginia Certified Planning Commissioners program held last month. The 10-week program will assist Secrist in his job as Blacksburg's town manager.

CHRISTINA MACCHERONE of Blacksburg won eight Virginia Press Women writing awards in four categories in the 1994 Communications Contest. Maccherone is a free-lance writer and public relations specialist for Radford University. CONNIE AKERS of Radford won five writing awards at the event. Akers is a free-lance graphic designer.

ROBIN HUDSON of Riner has been appointed local coordinator by the Academic Year in America program to arrange overseas experiences for high school students. Students visit from Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil and other countries for intercultural exchange in the summer. Hudson will coordinate these events.

JO BURROUGHS of Blacksburg has been named Wilderness Road Chorus Sweet Adeline of the Year. The honor goes to the chorus member who has contributed outstanding service and dedication to the group throughout all her years of membership. Burroughs is originally from Pulaski. She is a registered nurse supervisor for Community Home Care.

Officers for the Blacksburg Mountain View Garden Club were recently selected. They are: HARRIET DAMANT, EVELYN FARRIER, LULA ROBERTS, CANDY SPRINGER, and CAROLYN ELLER. KATE HOGE was elected an honorary member.

ED PHIPPS, RANDY MCCALLISTER and ED COUSINS flew 45 youngsters as part of a Young Eagles program in April. The program gave the children a chance to fly in an airplane, some of them for the first time.

TRACY CRAMER of Blacksburg recently won a contest sponsored by Kool Country, 100.7-FM. He and a guest will take a cruise to the western Caribbean. The eight-day trip includes airfare to Miami.

B.J. WILLARD of Christiansburg has been accepted to referee at the National Men's and Women's Volleyball Championships in Tulsa, Ok. She also will referee at the Nike Volleyball Festival in Sacramento in June.

The Blacksburg Junior Woman's Club held its 26th annual Antique Showsale and Quilt Show last month and DONNA BATES of Christiansburg received a Best in Show award for her quadruple Irish Chain quilt. JUDY ALBERT of Wytheville received a Viewer's Choice award for her Wholecloth quilt, and BARRY SIMMS of Blacksburg won the quilt raffle.

AMY UNDERHILL LYTHGOE has joined the United Cerebral Palsy of the Mid-South Inc. as Special Events assistant coordinator. She is a graduate of William and Mary.

STEVE HIGGINS received the Boy Scout Eagle Award last month after earning 28 merit badges, completing a community service project and passing the Eagle Board of Review. He will attend Radford University next year.

CAROLE DAVIS and MARTHA DILLARD, both of Blacksburg, recently won purchase awards in the Henley Southeastern Spectrum in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The following officers were elected for the Friends of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library board: KAREN LOFERSKI, ANNE GLASS, SHERRY BURKE and JACKIE NUTTER. The chairmen for each of the local chapters are: KEN AND MARION WOODRIDGE, Blacksburg; MARY CAROL MANDZAK, Christiansburg; HILDA HARMON, Floyd; and ADELIA ARRINGTON, Montgomery County Bookmobile.

MARILYN BUHYOFF was awarded the YMCA's Distinguished Leadership Award for volunteer work with the YMCA at Virginia Tech. This award is one of the highest honors of the YMCA.

RICHARD BAMBACH of the Department of Geological Sciences at Virginia Tech was the speaker at the April meeting of the Southside Garden Club. He discussed the geology of the New River area.

The Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International inducted six new members at its last meeting. They are: BARBARA STEPP, MARTHA STALLINGS, LINDA SMITH, FRAN SHEPHERD, KATHY HUFFMAN and SUSAN ARIEU. The new officers for 1994-1995 are: TERRYEE CHISHOLM, MARY FAIN, PAULINE KRISH, PATRICIA WILLIAMS, LAVINIA BOGGESS and VIRGINIA DEAL LAWRENCE.

ELLIE LINKOUS of Blacksburg and BARBARA VANDYKE of Radford were recently recognized by the Girl Scouts of America. Linkous received the Council Plaque Award for long-time outstanding service to the Girl Scouts. VanDyke received the honor pin as a registered adult Girl Scout whose service has benefitted two or more service units.
