BOTETOURT, PH ATHLETES HONORED

By nature, Ashley Moore and John Edwards are competitors, in athletics and academics.

Both prospered in perhaps the most difficult competition of their high school careers Thursday night when Moore, from Lord Botetourt, and Edwards, of Patrick Henry, were chosen B'nai B'rith Athletic and Achievement Award winners from a field of 30 peers.

Both greeted the news with surprise and humility.

``I've always tried to work hard and do my best,'' Moore said. ``It's a great honor. I didn't expect to win.''

Edwards echoed her thoughts.

``It's a great honor just to be recognized,'' he said. ``I'd like to thank all the people at my school for four great years. I couldn't have done it without them.''

Moore's resume ranged from such accomplishments as four-year careers each in basketball, volleyball and softball to the National Honor Society, to her volunteer chores for such groups as the Roanoke Health Department and Tinker Mountain Industries.

Edwards' portfolio includes varsity cross country, indoor and outdoor track, soccer, French National Honor Society, USSA National History & Government Award and work for such groups as Red Cross Bloodmobile and Habitat for Humanity.

Moore will attend Campbell University to play basketball. She is considering studying pharmacology. Edwards is bound for Princeton University, where he hopes to pole-vault and study history.

The speaker at the annual banquet at the Sheraton was Hollins College President Margaret O'Brien. Her message:

``Hard work: There is simply no substitute for it.''

Dennis Brumberg and Roanoke Times & World-News sportswriter Bob Teitlebaum spoke about late Roanoke World-News sports editor Bob McLelland. Teitlebaum presented a plaque to McLelland's widow, Barbara.

The other nominees were David Kunkle and Emily Rakes of Cave Spring; Tommy Fisher and Audrey Caldwell of Craig County; Randon Webber and Krystal Lumsden of Franklin County; Jason Anderson and Kelly Winter of Glenvar; Michael Baker and Amber Vines of James River; Kristopher Keeton of Lord Botetourt; Jason Davis and Lesley Dodson of North Cross; Shane Whisnant and Shannon Yopp of Northside; Amy Speas of Patrick Henry; Patrick Clapsaddle and Jennifer Pohlig of Pulaski County; Michael Kolnok and Jacquelyn Hinman of Roanoke Catholic; Philip Wegner and Lindsey Powell of Roanoke Valley Christian; Marcus Parker and Heather Moore of Salem; Jason Criss and Nicole Johnson of William Byrd; and Shannon Allmon and Lucretia Holland of William Fleming.

The award has been given to boys every year since 1951 and to girls since 1976.
