CUSTIS, DEANE MAKE OLYMPIC FESTIVAL BASKETBALL SQUADS

Two freshmen who played key roles in the basketball seasons of Virginia Tech and Virginia will be teammates during the U.S. Olympic Festival.

Tech forward Ace Custis and UVa guard Harold Deane have been named to the 12-member South team that will play against East, North and West teams July 2-5 in St. Louis. The teams are made up of players who haven't entered their sophomore year of college eligibility.

The South team is coached by Perry Clark, whose Tulane team faced Custis twice last season in Metro Conference games. Louisville's DeJuan Wheat, the Metro's freshman of the year, also is on the South roster.

Custis, a 6-foot-7 native of Eastville, started every game and had regular-season averages of 10.7 points and a team-high 9.0 rebounds. His 233 rebounds broke Dale Solomon's 15-year-old record for Tech freshmen. Custis, named to the Metro's all-freshman team, strengthened the Hokies' inside game as they finished with an 18-10 mark after going 10-18 in 1992-93.

Deane stepped in when point guard Cory Alexander was injured and was named to the ACC's all-rookie team. He started 27 of 31 games, averaged 12.3 points and led the Cavaliers in 3-pointers (51) and steals (42).

The Festival teams were chosen by USA Basketball's 10-member men's collegiate committee, chaired by Southern California coach George Raveling. - Staff report
