The Panthers now face the daunting task of winning twice today and once Sunday to reach the Division III College World Series. Ferrum (26-6) faces Mary Washington (27-6) at noon today in the losers' bracket. Mary Washington eliminated Bridgewater 4-3.
The winner of that game faces North Carolina Wesleyan at 4 p.m. If Wesleyan loses, there will be a championship game Sunday in the double-elimination tournament.
Jason Jenkins got the victory for Wesleyan, and Matt Smith knocked in Ferrum's lone run. Jimmy Hamilton (9-2) took the loss.
In other sports in the region:
The Virginia Tech golf team shot a 294 on the second day of the NCAA East Regional at Grand National Lake Golf Course in Opelika, Ala., to climb from 14th to eighth place with a two-day total of 607.
Clemson and Wake Forest continue to share the lead at 590. Defending NCAA champion Florida is tied with Georgia Tech for third at 592.
Freshman Curtis Deal fired a 2-under-par 70, the low round of the day, to lead the Hokies. Deal's two-day total of 143 ties him for third individually with East Tennessee State's Garrett Willis. David Seawell of South Carolina is in first at 141.
Matt Martin and Sean Farrell each shot a 73 for Tech. David Havens had a 78 and Brian Sharp carded a 79.
Misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest against former Virginia Tech basketball player Jay Purcell will be dismissed if he is not charged with any other criminal offenses before Nov. 17.
Purcell was arrested April 14 in Blacksburg after he allegedly pushed a police officer who was breaking up a skirmish between Purcell and another person. The Blacksburg native's charges were taken under advisement Thursday in Montgomery County General District Court by Judge Thomas Frith. If Purcell avoids trouble, his record will be cleansed in November.
Bounty hunters should be plentiful tonight at at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway.
Whitey Taylor, the track's promoter, is offering a $1,000 bounty on Late Model driver Rodney Cundiff, who has won four consecutive races. Taylor is expecting several New River Valley Speedway racers to compete at Franklin County since the NRVS race is Sunday. Taylor has waived the pit fee for NRVS drivers.
Drivers from Lonesome Pine, Franklin County, South Boston and Orange County are expected to enter the twin 75-lap Late Model Stock Car races Sunday afternoon at New River Valley Speedway.
The Cook's Clean Centers/Agee's Auto Parts 250 is the first of three Sunday afternoon races scheduled this season at the Radford track to avoid conflicts with Saturday night Winston Cup events. Since most area NASCAR-sanctioned speedways race on Saturday nights, the Sunday afternoon events will give drivers chasing the Winston Racing Series Mid-Atlantic Region points title a chance to improve their standing.
In addition to twin 75-lap Late Model Stock events, there will be 35 laps for the Limited Sportsmen and 25 laps each for the Mini and Pure Stock divisions. Gates open at 10 a.m., with practice starting at noon. The first green flag falls at 3 p.m.
