BLACKSBURG WINS SOCCER TITLE

Blacksburg rolled past Radford 5-0 in the New River District tournament championship boys' soccer game Friday on the Indians' field.

Gregg Adamo had a goal and an assist. Josh Powell, Brian Tillman, Warren Lee and John Gwazdauskias also scored for the Indians (13-0-2) who will play host to Marion Tuesday in the Region IV semifinals.

Radford (12-5) is also in Region IV and goes to Virginia High the same day. The championship game is set for Friday.

Goalie Ben Pinkerton and Chris Akins shared the shutout as Blacksburg beat the Bobcats for the third time.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Senior Kevin Dalal and junior Jeff Henley of defending Group AA state champion Salem have a chance to win individual doubles and team state championships after helping the host Spartans defeat Fieldale-Collinsville 9-0 for the Region III team championship.

Salem will go for its second straight championship in the Group AA tournament June 1-2 at Poquoson High School, and Dalal and Henley will be playing for the individual doubles title, too. Senior Jay Gilliland of Lord Botetourt will play for the Group AA singles crown after defeating Dalal 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 for the Region III individual championship.

Dalal and Henley defeated Gilliland and his brother, Jamey, a freshman, 6-3, 6-2, for the doubles championship. Will Wimmer, Jon Valera, Peter Moran and Mark Byington won in singles in helping Salem repeat as the Region III champions. Henley, Vivek Reddy, Valera, Byington, Moran and Wimmer won in doubles.

In Bristol, Blacksburg's Robert Gibb defeated Virginia High's Chad Jones 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, Jones and Hank Rainero stopped Gibb and Justin Turner 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Regional finals are set Tuesday at Richlands.

\ BASEBALL: In Galax, Floyd County scored eight unearned runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-2 victory over the Maroon Tide in a game that did not count in the Mountain Empire District standings.

Dwayne Hale had two hits, drove in two runs and scored two for the Buffaloes (11-7). Eric Wade and Ken Houtz had two hits each for Galax (6-12).

In Blacksburg, Jay Safford, Clay Scott and Michael Donohue drove in three runs each to power the Indians to a 17-2 rout of Auburn in a non-district game.

Brian Smith held the Eagles (5-13) to one hit in four innings to pick up the victory. Smith struck out eight to help Blacksburg improve its record to 4-14.

Justin Sogmon went 3-for-5 with three RBI as visiting Franklin County defeated Patrick Henry 14-6 in the regular-season finale for the Roanoke Valley District teams.

David Webster (4-3) picked up the win, striking out seven, walking five and giving up five hits. Webster also was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Eagles (14-4, 11-1). Teammate Scott Lynch went 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored and Chad Foutz was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

At Salem, the Spartans beat Northside 5-3 to clinch second place and a bye in Blue Ridge District tournament. R.J. Beckwith pitched 6 innings to get the victory while John Duffy got the last two outs for the save. The Spartans (11-6-1 overall, 6-3-1 in the Blue Ridge) were led offensively by Brian Crosswhite, who went 3-for-3 with one RBI, Greg Harrison, who drove in two runs, and Ricky Eubank, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
