SALEM TRIUMPHS IN TENNIS

Senior Kevin Dalal and junior Jeff Henley of defending Group AA state champion Salem have a chance to win doubles and team state championships after helping the Spartans defeat visiting Fieldale-Collinsville 9-0 for the Region III team championship Friday.

Salem will seek its second consecutive state title June 1-2 at Poquoson High School, and Dalal and Henley will be playing for the doubles title, too. Senior Jay Gilliland of Lord Botetourt will play for the Group AA singles crown after defeating Dalal 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 in the Region III championship match.

Dalal and Henley defeated Gilliland and his brother, Jamey, 6-3, 6-2, for the doubles championship. Will Wimmer, Jon Valera, Peter Moran and Mark Byington won in singles to help Salem repeat as the Region III champion. Henley, Vivek Reddy, Valera, Byington, Moran and Wimmer won in doubles.

In other high school sports:

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At Lynchburg College, Salem's Jill Archer won the Region III singles championship with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Fieldale-Collinsville's Amy Clark.

Archer then teamed with Betsy Hall to defeat Altavista's Christy Mohr and Kristi Reghard 6-1, 6-2 in the doubles final.

The Spartans' doubles team and Archer will advance to the Group AA state tournament June 1 at Radford.

Salem lost the team championship to Jefferson Forest 5-4. Archer, Beth Howdyshell and Hall had singles victories for Salem. The Cavaliers rallied to win two of three doubles matches and clinched the team championship when Julie Roberson and Andrea Madonia defeated Howdyshell and Taylor Bruce 6-3, 6-4 to snap a 4-4 tie.

\ SOFTBALL: At William Byrd, the Terriers rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, beating Lord Botetourt 8-6 in a Blue Ridge District game.

After the Cavaliers (13-5 overall, 6-4 in the district) scored four runs to take a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth, Tracy Doupnik came through with a two-run double for William Byrd (16-1-1, 10-0-0). Tamasa Adams also played a key role in the victory, going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and four RBI and pitching the last three innings to improve her record to 5-0.

At Northside, Ronda Rankin struck out 10 and gave up three hits as Salem defeated the Vikings 8-4 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Rankin was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. Erica Lokey tripled in two runs. Salem is 14-4 overall and 8-2 in the district.

\ BASEBALL: In Salem, the Spartans beat Northside 5-3 to clinch second place and a bye in the Blue Ridge District tournament. R.J. Beckwith pitched 6 innings to get the victory, and John Duffy got the last two outs to pick up the save. The Spartans (11-6-1, 6-3-1) were led offensively by Brian Crosswhite, who went 3-for-3 with one RBI, Greg Harrison, who drove in two runs, and Ricky Eubank, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In Daleville, Mike McGuire (8-0) went 3-for-3 with five RBI and pitched five strong innings to lead regular-season champion William Byrd to a 14-1 rout of Lord Botetourt in the Blue Ridge District.

Justin Sigmon went 3-for-5 with three RBI as visiting Franklin County defeated Patrick Henry 14-6 in the regular-season finale for the Roanoke Valley District teams.
