DRUG-BY-MAIL CHARGES COULD NET 70-YEAR TERMS

A federal grand jury on Friday indicted two Roanoke residents in connection with a scheme to smuggle marijuana and cocaine into the Roanoke Valley through the mail.

The five-count indictment alleges that Timothy Simmons, 31, and Rose Marie Morton, 34, worked together to mail drugs from California to Roanoke at least three times since 1992.

The indictment charges that Simmons, former owner of Play While You Wait Barber Shop, mailed the drugs by express mail to Morton's Southwest Roanoke home.

U.S. postal inspectors seized a package containing drugs April 21.

Both defendants face up to 70 years in prison and a $3.6 million fine.
