ALEXANDER, George Wright, 83, of Troutville, died Friday, May 20, 1994 in the Veteran's Medical Center in Salem following a long, serious illness. George was born in Missouri on January 16, 1911. He was a veteran of WWII, retiring after 21 years in the U. S. Navy, he started a second career with the Naval Support System of Atlantic. He was a field engineer, specializing in large guns and missiles. At the age of 62, he received an injury for which he was awarded. He retired again after 20 years and moved to Troutville. Mr. Alexander was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge, past patron of the Williamson Road OES Chapter 119, member Scottish Rite and York Rite bidies, and the Kazim Temple, a member of the U. S. Navy Memorial, Washington, D. C. and had been active in Botetourt County politics, as well as State and National. He was a member of the Rainbow Forest Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Anderson and Mamie Elizabeth Brackett Alexander, sister, Louise, three half sisters, and two half brothers. Survivors include his wife, Marie Brewer Alexander; son, George W. Alexander Jr., Camarillo, Calif. Funeral services will be private at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rainbow Forest Baptist Church or the Williamson Road OES Chapter 119. Arrangement by Rader Funeral Home, Troutville.

ATKINSON, William Ray, 80, of Radford, died Friday, May 20, 1994, at Radford Community Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude B. Atkinson of Radford; two sons, Gary Ray Atkinson of Roanoke, Randy Atkinson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two sisters, Ada Smith of Melbourne, Fla., Hilda Kite of Staunton; three brothers, Spencer Atkinson of Radford, Clifton Atkinson of Roanoke and Boyd Atkinson of Orlando, Fla.; also survived by four grandchildren. Funeral services wil be held Monday 2 p.m. from the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. BARNETTE, Louis Manzo, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, May 19, 1994. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Miniver Barnette; devoted cousins; other relatives and friends. DAVIS, Mary Divers, 77, of Roanoke, died Saturday, May 21, 1994, at Camelot Hall. She was the widow of James Ralph Davis and was retired from the Easter Seal Society. Mrs. Davis was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. Following retirement, she did volunteer work at the Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center. Mrs. Davis attended Radford College and was a graduate of National Business College. Surviving are a daughter, Katherine Schear, Roanoke; grandchildren, Laura Schear, David Schear, Karen Schear; brothers and sisters, Missouri D. Davis, Roanoke, Paul M. Divers, Vero Beach, Fla., Perry G. Divers, Roanoke, Oliver Divers, Buchanan, Ruth Richards, Orlando, Fla., Clayton Divers, San Diego, Calif. DEAN, Margaret Christine Collins, 84, of Max Meadows, The Gunton Park Comm., died Friday, May 20, 1994, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Walter and Sarah Jones Collins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen H. Dean, one daughter-in-law, Ruby Friend Dean, and one grandson, Jerry Hughes

Dean. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ruby and Frank Downing of Chesapeake, Va., three sons and daughters-in-law, Verlin and Margaret Dean of Pulaski, Damon M. Dean of Max Meadows, Raymond and Joyce Dean of Radford; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. D. Ray Humphries, and the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment will follow in the Jones Family Cemetery. FLEMING, Peggy P., 79, of Blacksburg, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 1994. She was a retired employee of VPI & SU in food services. Surviving are two sons, Floyd K. (Keith) Fleming, Christiansburg, Richard K. (Dickie) Fleming, Bristol, Va.; four daughters, Joyce F. Lyczak, Florida, Phyllis F. Keith, Willis, Rebecca F. Long, Marlyn F. Haynes both of Blacksburg. A memorial service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 1994, at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, Christiansburg, by the Rev. M.D. Saunders.

GIVENS, Richard Rowan, 79, of New Castle, died Saturday, May 21, 1994, in a Salem hospital. He was a member of the New Castle Christian Church and retired, with 28 years service, from Newport News Ship Yards. He is survived by his wife, Clara M (Tootie) Givens; two brothers, Walter (Buck) Givens, Newport News, Hampton S. Givens, New Castle; several nephews; and one niece. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 23, 1994, at Boitnott Chapel, with interment in Huffman Memorial Park. GOOCH, Anne Hart, 79, of Roanoke, died Saturday, May 21, 1994. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, The Assembly, The Mill Mountain Garden Club and Garden Club of Virginia and the member of Virginia League. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Garrett G. Gooch III of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Garrett G. IV and Penny Gooch, Roanoke; three daughters and sons-in-law, Emily and Robert Crenshaw, Virgina Beach; Anne and Jerald Culley, Roanoke; Claiborne and William Hammond, Powhatan County, Va. ; two brother, James P. Hart Jr. and John L. Hart both of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren. A private graveside service will be conducted at Evergreen Burial Park, followed by a memorial service to be held at the Second Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m. Monday with Dr. William R. HESTER, Myrtle Carnell, 94, of Fries, passed away Friday, May 20, 1994 at Twin County Hospital, Galax, Va. Surviving are a daughter, Frances Fowler, Austinville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Kathleen Hester, Fries, Dan and Aleen Hester, Lancaster, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Ruth Cornett, Royal Oak, Mich.; two sisters, Mamie Mabe, Allisonia, and Lula Rodgers, Pulaski; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Fries United Methodist Church, Fries, Va., Sunday, May 22, 1994 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Bolling officiating. Interment in Fries Cemetery. HOBBS, Lloyd L. Dr., 81, of Blacksburg, died Friday, May 20, 1994, in Buxton, North Carolina. Dr. Hobbs was born in Edenton, North Carolina on December 2, 1912, a son of the late Hillary T. Hobbs and Alice Jordon Hobbs. He attended Appalachian State University, earning letters in wrestling, football and track. He graduated in 1941 from the school of Denistry, Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Hobbs practiced dentistry for 48 years in Blacksburg, an hononary member of A.D.A. and Virginia State Dental Society, active in District Dental Organizations having served as president of Rexphipps Dental Society. He served on the Blacksburg Town Council for 10 years, a member of the hospital staffs in Montgomery County for 36 years, active in the building of Montgomery Regional Hospital where he helped formulate medical staff rules, served as secretary and treasurer on the staff and retired to the honorary staff in 1988. Dr. Hobbs was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Blacksburg, a member of Whisner Memorial Methodist Church, served on the Board of Stewards and the Board of Trustees and the building committee, a member of the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club since 1942, where he was a past president with 39 years perfect attendance, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1968 he received an award for volunteering at Camp Easterseal for 21 years. He established a scholarship at Appalachian State University in the name of his son, Lloyd LeRoy Hobbs, Jr. Dr. Hobbs served as Alumni President of A.S.U. and was a member of the Presidents Committee for 10 years. He was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd L. Hobbs, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Ella Thompson Hobbs; two daughters and son-in-law, Hannah Hobbs-Roulstone and Capt. U.S.N. Donald Bruce Roulstone, Arlington, Va., Stephena Hobbs, Runyan, Virginia Beach; one granddaughter, Erna Austin Runyan; two stepgrandchildren, Virginia Elizabeth Roulston and Donald Brian Roulstone; a niece, Jessica Hobbs Townsend, Hixon, Tenn. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, May 23, 1994, at Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Hobbs and the Rev. M. Chick Wilkerson officiating. HOLLAND, Theodore Roosevelt, 81, of Roanoke, died Friday, May 20, 1994 at the VA Veteran's Care Center. Mr. Holland is survived by his wife, Fannie Elizabeth Holland, Roanoke; one daughter, Miss Barbara E. Holland, Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Alfonza Z. Holland, Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elaine S. Ware and Mrs. Sara Holland, both of Roanoke, and Ms. Sue Holland of New York; 30 nephews, nieces and cousins. JACKSON, Charles Gleaves, 72, of Austinville, died Friday, May 20, 1994 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church for forty years, a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II, a member of Grover King Post No. 1115, V. F. W. and was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company. He was preceded in death by his father, Fredrick Thomas Jackson, and a brother, Versal Taylor Jackson. He is survived by his wife, Zerline Copenhaver Jackson; his mother, Cora T. Jackson; two sisters and brother-in-law, Mildred Dobbins, Alma and Keith Collins, all of Rt. 2, Wytheville; one brother and sister-in-law, Fredrick Douglas and Pauline Jackson of Rt. 2, Wytheville; eight nieces; and five nephews. JONES, Lucille Byrd, 86, of Roanoke, formerly of Pulaski, died Friday evening, May 20, 1994 in the Meadowbrook Nursing Home, Shawsville, Virginia. She was born in Snowville, Va. on December 2, 1907, and was the daughter of the late Charles Montague Byrd and Emmaline Silvers Byrd. She was a former employee of Pulaski Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bryce Albert Martin and John Jared Jones. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Emma Byrd Crowell and David Crowell, Roanoke; one sister, Mrs. Jack (Sylvia) Ellis, Dublin. SINK, Glenn Franklin, 83, of Hollins, passed away early Saturday, May 21, 1994 at his home after a courageous fight with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Frances W. Sink. He retired from the Roanoke City Water Department and was a longtime member of the Enon Baptist Church in Hollins. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Judy A. Hancock, Roanoke, and Phyllis J. and Curtis O. Simmons, Daleville; seven grandchildren, Phil Hancock Jr., Kevin Hancock, Curtis O. (Skip) Simmons Jr., all of Roanoke, Deborah Wiley, Steven G. He was a member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad.
