Norfolk Southern Corp. has made several key operating changes in its headquarters in Norfolk that the company said will have impact on its Western Virginia operations: THOMAS C. SHELLER, executive vice president-administration, will retire from the corporation on July 1 after 44 years in the railroad industry.
JON L. MANETTA has been named vice president-transportation. He first worked at Norfolk & Western in Roanoke as a co-op student in 1956 and again worked in Roanoke from 1962 to 1965 and from 1981 to 1987. He was most recently assistant vice president-transportation in charge of Norfolk Southern's control center in Atlanta.
Also, PAUL N. AUSTIN was elected vice president-personnel. He began working for Norfolk & Western in Roanoke in 1968 and was based here until 1982, when he was tranferred to Norfolk. He was most recently assistant vice president-personnel.
ROBERT S. SPENSKI was elected vice president-labor relations. He was most recently senior assistant vice president-labor relations.
ARCHITECTS and ENGINEERS
TIMM JAMIESON, director of architecture at Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern in Roanoke, has been named to the American Institute of Architects's College of Fellows, an honor awarded to architects who have made significant contributions to the profession and the second-highest honor the AIA can bestow on a member. Jamieson is the first architect at his firm to receive this award.
BANKING
ALLEN V. WASS has been promoted to assistant vice president at Central Fidelity Bank in Roanoke. He joined the bank recently as product manager in the treasury services area. Prior to that, he was with First Union National Bank in Charlotte, N.C.
BILLY P. CRAFT, president of Village Motors Inc. in Lynchburg, has been named a new director of Piedmont BankGroup Inc. based in Martinsville.
COAL
GREGORY M. DANIELS has been named president of Westmoreland Coal Co.'s Virginia division in Big Stone Gap where he will be responsible for mining operations. He was previously president of Westmoreland's Hampton division in Boone and Logan counties, W.Va. He has worked for the company for 21 years.
FINANCIAL SERVICES
ROBERT H. PHILLIPS and JOHN W. RADER JR. have been named senior vice presidents and investment officers at Wheat First Butcher Singer Inc.'s Roanoke office. They both joined the company in 1983. Also, ROBERT E. BRAILSFORD, who joined the firm in 1986, has been promoted to investment officer. At Wheat First Butcher Singer Inc.'s Martinsville office, L. DEAN JOHNSTON has been promoted to investment officer. He joined the firm in 1990.
MANUFACTURING
ERNEST C. SMOAKE has been named vice president merchandising, Manor House Division of Singer Furniture Co. in Roanoke. He will be responsible for the product development, merchandising and sales support activities of the division. Smoake comes to Singer from Motivational Marketing & Communications Inc. in Greensboro, N.C.
MEDIA
MAURICE R. FLIESS, formerly a reporter for The Roanoke Times and managing editor and reporter for The Daily Review in Clifton Forge, has been named editiorial director of The Freedom Forum, a media-oriented foundation. He will edit publications produced at the Forum's World Center in Arlington and will help develop a computer-based, on-line worldwide information service.
RETAIL
SHIRLEY STEPHENSON has been promoted to the position of manager of Lazarus' Tanglewood store. She was previously an assistant manager at Lazarus. Prior to that she was in a management position with Stephenson and Aldridge Furniture Co.
