WYTHE'S GREEN, GLENVAR'S NERVO STAND OUT AT REGION C

George Wythe's Stacey Green won six events and Glenvar's Trish Nervo set two records to highlight the Region C track and field meet at Giles High School on Saturday.

Green set a regional record in the triple jump (37 feet, 8\ inches) and also finished first in the long jump, high jump and the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes in leading the Maroons to the team title with 103 points. Floyd County was second with 71 points.

Nervo continued her run of success this year by winning the 1,600 and 3,200 in record times. Nervo, a sophomore who has won two Group A cross country championships, finished the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 17.5 seconds and the 3,200 in 11:52.5.

The George Wythe boys also won the Region C title. Led by Jason Alexander's record times in the 1,600 (4:28.7) and the 3,200 (9:49.9), the Maroons scored 72 points to finish ahead of second-place Chilhowie, which scored 50 1/2.

The only other record set was by Narrows' Melinda Fleeman, who won the shot put with a record toss of 38-8.

Boys' winners from Timesland were Auburn's V.J. Lumia in the high jump and 200, Jeff Bourne of George Wythe in the 100, Glenvar's Ben Mahala in the 300 hurdles, Neil Thompson of Galax in the 100 hurdles and Tony Callahan of George Wythe in the shot put.
