CUNDIFF A WINNER AGAIN

The bounty hunters turned out in force Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway, but Rodney Cundiff outfoxed them again.

Cundiff won the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature of the Kingery Brothers 300, outrunning a 19-car field and saving track promoter Whitey Taylor a $1,000 bounty offered to any driver who could beat him. He has won five consecutive races, one short of the track record, and climbed into third place in points.

Cundiff's streak appeared to be in danger after he qualified ninth. He used several early caution periods to his advantage, however, gradually advancing and claiming the lead on lap 31.

"Our qualifying's been off the last couple of weeks," Cundiff said, "but my crew had this car working on the green flag laps [during the race]."

Pole-sitter Frankie Pennington, who led the first 31 laps, finished second. The top finishers both driver Fords.

"I may have been flying tonight, but I was on a different plane than [Cundiff]," Pennington said. "But this is just our second time here this year. Second place is nothing to be ashamed of."

Points leader Dudley Lawhorn finished third. Rick Sigmon and Dicky Wilson placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Tim McGuire, making his first FCS appearance this season, ran second or third for three-quarters of the race before retiring to the pits early and finished 14th.

After the race, Taylor announced the bounty - payable to a driver of a Chrysler or General Motors car - will be extended for one week.

In other races Saturday night:

Steve Lam won the Mini Stock competition. Gary Joyce of Martinsville finished second, and Sonny Arrington, who started on the outside, placed third.

Street Stock points leader Mike Dudley prevailed again when Bill Bratton spun front-runner Phillip VanDerVeer on lap 19. VanDerVeer and Bratton rallied to finish second and third, respectively.

Red Hartman won the Pure Stock class, breaking a tie with co-points leader Mike Owens, who finished second. Kevin Ransom was third.

Thirteen-year-old Travis Sharpe won his third Rookie race this season. Last week's winner, Chad Hodges, was second, one spot ahead of Stephanie Yates.
