PH GIRLS' SEASON COMES TO END

All good things must come to an end. For the Patrick Henry High School girls' soccer team, the screeching halt came Monday night.

Gar-Field, respresenting the Cardinal District, upended the previously unbeaten Patriots 4-1 in a Northwest Region quarterfinal game at River's Edge Sports Complex. The Patriots completed their season 15-1.

The Indians, 12-3-2, advance to play Wednesday night against the winner of the Hylton-Stafford match-up.

Gar-field scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game, on long, high kicks from Corrine Bolder and Stephanie Jansen. PH goalkeeper Shannon Groves appeared to be fighting a strong wind on both shots.

Groves was in position to block the shots, but both got through her outstretched hands. "I think she just misjudged them a little bit," said PH coach Sharon McCulley.

Patrick Henry pulled within one at 2-1 with 18:45 remaining in the half when Brooke Henderson scored on an assist from Carrie Moore.

Gar-Field's Mandy Diedrich and Missy Wycinski scored in the second half to seal the victory.

Wycinski, a 5-foot-1, 87-pound sophomore has scored a team-high 25 goals this season. "I like to think I'm a hustler," Wycinski said. "People think that being small is a disadvantage, but I've never found it to be so."

An apparent fifth Indian goal scored by Bolder was nullified because of an offsides penalty.

Wycinski, Bolder and Moore are all memebers of the U-16 U.S. Olympic Development Team from Virginia. Sixteen girls comprise the team.

"We played 100% better than we did against them last time," said McCulley. Gar-Field routed the Patriots 6-0 last year in the regionals, scoring all of the goals in the second half.

"Last time, we didn't even get the ball down at their end of the field," McCulley said. We did much better tonight. Next year, we'll beat them."

Groves left the game with 26:17 to play after dislocating her kneecap. "It's an injury she suffered for the first time last year," McCulley said.

Groves' replacement, freshman Carolyn Hodges, was keeping the scorebook when she was summoned into the game. She allowed just one goal.

Gar-Field controlled the ball for most of the game. The PH goalkeepers combined to make 15 saves. Indian goalie Joanna Beavers was credited with just four.
