Winston-Salem cut four runs off a five-run deficit, but Salem relievers Sean Evans and Marc Pisciotta slammed the door in the final two innings of Salem's 7-6 Carolina League victory.
Evans and Pisciotta quelled the Spirits' rally with scoreless relief work in the eighth and ninth innings. Pisciotta struck out the final two in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 10th save.
In the early innings, it didn't appear Salem starter Marc Wilkins (3-2) would need much help. The Buccaneers led 7-2 after a four-run fifth that featured four consecutive hits. Jeff Conger had an RBI single, Jason Kendall doubled home two runs and Jake Austin singled home one to chase Winston-Salem starter Ned Darley and make the score 5-1.
Winston-Salem mounted its rally in the sixth when Vasquez doubled again and scored on an error. Cleveland Ladell hit a homer to straight-away center field to open a three-run seventh for the Spirits. Dan Frye greeted Evans with a two-out single that scored two runs and left Winston-Salem a run down. With the tying run on first, Evans got Ricky Magdaleno to ground out.\
