MAN CHARGED IN ATTACK

A 21-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and robbery in the stabbing of a Yellow Cab Co. driver in Roanoke this month, police said.

James E. Davis IV of the 300 block of Hackley Avenue Northwest was arrested Friday at his home. He also was charged with obstruction of justice after he tried to flee police. He remained in the city jail late Monday in lieu of $15,000 bail.

At about 6:20 a.m. on May 9, cab driver Roy G. Correll was dispatched to the 1900 block of Wayne Street Northeast to pick up a man who asked to be driven to an address on Loudon Avenue Northwest. Correll told him the address did not exist. The man then asked Correll to change $50. Correll said he did not have that much money.

The man then reached across the seat and placed his arm around Correll's neck, pulled him into the back seat and stabbed him several times in the chest and side, police said. The man also took Correll's wallet, which contained $20, police said.

Correll was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was released.
