BYRD CRUISES TO WIN

Michael Barry and Andy McCaskill scored three goals each and William Byrd broke open a close match with four goals in the first 6 minutes, 20 seconds of the second half to blow out Magna Vista 8-1 in the first round of the Region III boys' soccer tournament Monday night in Martinsville.

In the second game at Martinsville, Andrew Bailey scored his second goal of the night at the 25:34 mark of the second half to put Salem ahead for good in a 3-2 win over Brookville (12-3-2). The Spartans play host-team Martinsville in a Region III semifinal on Wednesday.

At Woodbridge, Cave Spring lost 9-0 to C.D. Hylton in the first round of the Northwest Region boy's soccer tournament, despite getting 33 saves from goalie Mike Newton.

BASEBALL: Brian Davis lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to score John Kolodo with the winning run and cap a two-run rally that gave Lord Botetourt (9-8-1) a 4-3 win over Rockbridge County (7-12) in the Blue Ridge District tournament.

At Covington, Tood Cook, David Cummings and Chris Crutchfield had three hits each as Alleghany County pounded Northside 17-5 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament.

Cook had a three-run homer for Alleghany, which collected 20 hits. David Miller had two hits for the Vikings.

Jason Pratt's two-out grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Floyd County to a 12-9 victory over visiting Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District play-in game Monday.

Fort Chiswell (5-12) took a 9-6 lead by scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth on a three-run homer by Dyer Jackson and a grand slam from Tony Moore.

Pratt was 2-for-3 with five RBI for Floyd (12-7), which plays regular-season champion Grayson County in a first-round tournament game at Fries today at 4:30 p.m.

At New Castle, Craig County scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to erase a 10-3 James River lead and coasted to a 17-10 win over the Knights in a first-round Pioneer District tournament game.

Keith Bryant's gland slam keyed the Knights' 10-run salvo in the first three innings. But James River managed only one hit the rest of the way off Craig reliever James Fisher.

The Rockets' 11-run fourth was spiked by six walks. Craigs's Dwain Sowers had two hits and two RB I in the inning, while Ben Boardwine had a two-run double. Boardwine finished with four RBI.

SOFTBALL: Selena Byers had a bases-loaded triple and scored on a passed ball to spark a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning and lead Liberty (14-5) to a 4-2 win over Brookville in the Seminole District tournament. Carla Goff (14-5) struck out nine and allowed one earned run in a complete-game two-hitter.

TENNIS:It was a short Group AAA Northwest Region boys' tennis tournament for the Roanoke Valley District in individual play at River's Edge.

In singles, Jeff Vining of C.D. Hylton eliminated Patrick Henry's Andrew Thomas 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Vining then lost in the singles' finals to G.W. Danville's Brett Moyer 7-5, 6-3. Moyer had beaten Woodbridge's David Terrill 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the other singles' semifinals.

In doubles, Gar-Field's Josh Levin and Landun Schrefer defeated Cave Spring's Randy Price and Jason Bialek 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. Moyer and Kevin Palmer teamed to beat Terrill and Mark Hauser 6-2, 6-0 in the other semifinal. Doubles' finals will be played today as will team semifinals. Patrick Henry represents the RVD in team play.
