BOLLMAN POCKETS VICTORY

The inaugural Roanoke One-Pocket Tournament was ruled by an underdog.

Dave Bollman, a 52-year-old house professional from Norfolk, shot his way through a field that included some of billiards' biggest names to score his biggest one-pocket victory Sunday night at Guys & Dolls Billiards on Williamson Road.

In a marathon 31/2-hour final, Bollman edged Billy Incardona of Chicago 5-4 to pick up the $2,800 prize.

``I'm very surprised to win this thing,'' said Bollman, who advanced to the final out of the winner's bracket, never losing a match.

``I was ranked No.3 in the country in 9-ball in 1989, but one-pocket is an entirely different story,'' he said.

Bollman, who stunned heavily favored Grady Mathews in the semifinals, was down 4-3 in the race to five games in the final before rallying against Incardona.

Incardona earned $1,800 for second place.

Mathews finished third, Howard Bickery of Columbus, Ohio, was fourth, Billy Stephens of Richmond was fifth and Tennessean Wade Crane took sixth.

Roanoke College women's lacrosse player Kerry Campbell was named first-team Division III All-America by Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. Teammate Francesca Foord-Kelcy was a second-team selection.

Campbell, a senior from Southboro, Mass., is a two-time All-South Region selection on defense. Foord-Kelcy, a junior from Virginia Beach, was also a first-team all-region and all-conference pick after scoring 33 goals and getting eight assists this spring.

University of Virginia women's lacrosse players Cherie Greer and Kelly Daddona headed a list of five Cavaliers named to the Brine Division I All-America team. Senior defender Greer and senior attacker Daddona were named to the first team. UVa junior attacker Anna Yates was named to the second team, and senior attacker Heather Goehringer and sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Cusimano were named to the third team.

Washington and Lee women's tennis player Marilyn Baker was named winner of the Tennis Magazine/Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award for the 1993-94 season.

Baker, a junior from Baldwin, N.Y., led the Generals to their best season ever and earned All-America honors for the second straight year. She has won 20 or more singles matches in each of her first three seasons and set a Washington and Lee record with 28 wins this season.

Virginia's Brian Buchanan, who batted .396 with 22 home runs, 66 RBI and an .838 slugging percentage, is a first-team outfielder on the All-ACC baseball team.

Duke's Ryan Jackson is the league's Player of the Year and North Carolina State's Tom Sergio is Rookie of the Year. Jackson batted .378 with 22 homers, 63 RBI and nine stolen bases, and he compiled a 7-5 record with four saves as a pitcher. Sergio led all ACC freshman with a .378 batting average.

Clemson first-year coach Jack Leggett was named the league's Coach of the Year after leading the No. 1-ranked Tigers to a 55-16 record.

Terry Jones hit a layup with eight seconds remaining to give the Roanoke Northwest Stars 14-and-under boys' basketball team a 68-67 win over Tony Squires Big Dogs of Richmond in the championship game of the Warrenton Spring-Fling Tournament on Sunday.

Jones led the Stars with 17 points and Devon Battle chipped in 16.

The victory avenged a 69-68 loss the Stars suffered to the Big Dogs in the tournament's opening round. Terron Reed scored 21 in that game for the Stars, Kermit Noll had 19 and Battle added 17. The Stars followed that loss with blowout wins over Faquier and Leesburg to advance to the championship.

Radford's women's basketball program wrapped up its recruiting by signing 5-9 guard Monique Miller from Miami-Dade Community College. Miller, a native of Bradenton, Fla., averaged 12.2 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Jaguars.
