In my own case, the primary reason for my apathy toward my community was that I had tended to think into the future. I thought not of what I could do for my community, and I didn't seize upon what it offered to me. Instead, I thought of what my life would be like in the future. I always had - as I'm sure many young people also have - a desire to move out of the place where I grew up. With this focus on what the future would hold, and with this future being as unlimited and as untainted as I want to make it, my views and assessment of my present situation tended to get slighted.
But my apathetic views are starting to change as I get older. Maybe it is true that with age comes wisdom, because in the past few years I have come to take an active interest in my community. I realize and appreciate the place where I live, because I now know my community fits the person I am. And I feel I should return the favor, by finding places where I can fit into and better my community.
