NORTHSIDE SQUEAKS BY ALLEGHANY

At Northside, the Vikings' Stacey Byrd doubled home Teresa Harris with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday as Northside beat Alleghany 4-3 in a Blue Ridge District softball tournament first-round game.

Alleghany's Joy Gauthier's two-run double tied the game in the seventh, and Nicole Curtis' RBI single in the top of the ninth gave Alleghany a 3-2 lead.

But on a 3-2 pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Northside's Cathy Griffin drew a walk from Gauthier to send the game to extra innings.

Harris walked and went to second on a passed ball in the bottom of the 10th. Byrd's two-out hit ended the game. The Vikings (10-8) play William Byrd at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Moyer Sports Complex in the second round.

In other high school softball:

At Daleville, Lord Botetourt took advantage Rockbridge County's wildness, receiving 17 walks and scoring 12 runs on wild pitches en route to a 20-5 five-inning victory in a Blue Ridge District tournament first-round game. The Cavaliers (12-6) had 12 stolen bases and got a solo home run from Laurie Ottaway. Jessica Thompson pitched a complete-game one-hitter and struck out eight. Rockbridge is 0-18. Botetourt plays Salem at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Moyer Sports Complex in the second round.

BOYS' TENNIS: At Wytheville Country Club, Glenvar and Floyd County won their semifinal matches and advanced to the Region C team championship this morning at 9. Glenvar defeated Rural Retreat 8-1, and Floyd County defeated Lebanon 7-2. In individual competition, Nick Varney of Glenvar advanced to the 1 p.m. final against Frank Turpin of Floyd County.

At River's Edge, Patrick Henry's boys' tennis team was shut out 9-0 by Woodbridge in the team semifinals of the Northwest Region tournament. Woodbridge and E.C. Glass, an 8-1 winner over Gar-Field, advanced to the team final at 9 a.m. today at River's Edge. In the doubles final, Josh Levin and Landon Schafer of Gar-Field beat Brett Moyer and Kevin Palmer of G.W.-Danville 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

GIRLS' SOCCER: Albemarle beat Cave Spring 1-0 and eliminated the Knights Monday from the Group AAA Northwest Region playoffs. Cave Spring finished the season with a 9-5 record.

BASEBALL: William Fleming had to hold off Patrick Henry down the stretch to win 8-7 in an opening-round Roanoke Valley District game at Maher Field.

Greg Duncan scattered six hits and gave up five earned runs in going the distance for the victory. Brian Short went 4-for-4 and scored two runs and Mike Souma went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Phillip Barrett added two hits and two RBI. Al Holland tripled and doubled as the Colonels (4-15) banged out 16 hits.

The Patriots' Brad Wright had two hits, drove in two and scored two.

Fleming plays Franklin County Friday morning in a semifinal game at Cave Spring
