GBO HAS BECOME A HIGH-CALIBER GOLF EVENT

Twenty years ago, the Greater Blacksburg Open was a local golf tournament in its first year.

Now the GBO is one of the premier regional men's golf events in Southwest Virginia. A field of between 124 and 144 golfers is expected when the two-day tournament tees off June 25.

"It attracts a very good caliber of golfer, both amateur and professional," said KEMP FANT, who is once again serving as tournament director. "We've consistently gotten good players. It's a beautiful setting. And the Blacksburg Country Club is an excellent location."

The country club will host the tournament despite the fire that destroyed the clubhouse in late February. Additional temporary facilities are expected to be in place at the club by that time. And most of the activities associated with the tournament take place outside on the mountainous par-72, 6,685-yard course.

"We expect an excellent field," said Fant. "We had a very good tournament last year and we feel we'll maintain that same caliber of competition that we've had in year's past. The tournament quality should not be affected at all."

Last year, MIKE KRULICH of Bluefield won the tournament's championship flight with a strong and steady second round.

And speaking of last year, the cost to enter that tournament is unchanged - $110. That covers two rounds of golf, cart rental each day and caps and bag tags.

The field will be broken into six or seven flights after the first day, depending upon the size of the field. Prizes are awarded to the top finishers in each flight. The biggest prize goes to the winner of the championship flight - $500.

The entry deadline is June 18. For more information about the tournament or how to sign-up, call Fant at 382-5379.

SULTANS OF SWAT: Brisk winds at Loving Field last week helped Golden Corral and Volvo GM put on a display of power in the Pulaski Men's Softball League.

Golden Corral had a league-record size players hit two or more home runs as it outslugged Volvo GM 34-19. The two teams combined for 25 round-trippers, smashing the league-record of 21 that had stood since 1979.

BRAD GOLDEN, GUY REEDY and CHRIS TICKLE each hit three home runs to pace Golden Corral's 17-home run attack. G.C.'s homer output fell two short of the league record of 19 set by Burton's Insurance in 1979.

In its other game, KEITH TURMAN pitched a two-hitter and BOBBY EASTER homered twice as Golden Corral beat All Sport/Pepsi 25-0.

All those runs helped Golden Corral remain one of three unbeaten teams in the league. Also at 6-0 are last year's league champions Athlete's Choice and the Outlaws, newcomers to the league.

Athlete's Choice had five players hit a pair of home runs as it downed Heilig-Meyers 27-6.

DOUG MABRY hit two home runs in each of the Outlaws' victories: 18-3 over the Hustlers and 28-9 over All Sport/Pepsi.

Elsewhere around the league, BRAD WILSON of Electroplate Rite hit three homers, making him just the 14th player in league history to accomplish the feat. But Wilson's historic heroics weren't enough as EPR lost to Mr. Bills 25-24.

CHAD OWEN went 6-for-6 and scored six runs while RYAN BLACKBURN went 6-for-6 with three triples as Budweiser set a season-high for runs in its 40-14 win over Pulaski Hospital.

Today is the ground-breaking for a new recreation softball field in Radford. The ceremony is set for 5:30 this afternoon at the field located on Hunters Road.
