WOMEN BOWLERS ROLL INTO ROANOKE

Linda Kelly of Huber Heights, Ohio, will be back to defend her title when the Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour returns to Roanoke on Friday for the second Viking Lanes LPBT Regional Open.

Kelly overcame a 15-pin deficit after the 19th of 20 games last year to defeat amateur Sandy Pridemore of Huntington, W.Va., and claim first-place money of $1,400 from a total purse of close to $5,000.

Kelly, the only bowler in the field to average more than 200 pins, will be joined by Pridemore and third-place finisher Joanne Harris, a two-time Virginia Queens champion from Occoquan.

There are 12 professionals - up from six last year - in the field, including LPBT regional winners Florence Henderson of Spring Lake, N.C.; Stephanie Chiera of Great Barrington, Mass.; and Jodi Monday of Toledo, Ohio.

Women who meet LPBT eligibility requirements, including at least a 180 average, may compete as "guests" and maintain their amateur standing until they win an LPBT regional or cash in two national events.

There will be five-game qualifying sessions beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, before the field is cut for 10 games of match play beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The participants in the open tournament will practice from 3-5 p.m. Friday, and there will be a pro-am Friday night with starting times of 7 and 9:30 p.m. The pro-am will be held under a no-tap format at a fee of $25 for adults and $15 for youths.

Yet another top candidate for the boys' basketball coaching job at Alleghany High School has withdrawn from consideration.

Abingdon High School's Marc Quesenberry, who was interviewed late last week, pulled out Wednesday.

"After considering everything, my wife and I decided to stay at Abingdon. We have some unfinished business," Quesenberry said.

At least one other former head coach, Carl Watson, an assistant at Warren County High School, has been interviewed. William Byrd assistant Pat Paye also remains in the running.

Watson, who was head coach at Davis & Elkin College for two years and coached three high schools in West Virginia, said he hasn't decided if he will accept the job if it Alleghany officials offer it to him.

Virginia's Brian Buchanan has been named a second-team Mizuno USA All-American by Collegiate Baseball. The junior outfielder/first baseman hit .396 with 22 home runs and 66 RBI for the Cavaliers.

Virginia Tech's Charlie Gillian was named to the All-Freshman team. Gillian, the only reliever on the squad, heads into the NCAA Tournament today with 12 saves and a 1.57 ERA for the Hokies.

Radford University's Kelly Dampeer, a shortstop from Northside High School, was an honorable-mention selection on the All-Freshman team.
