BOTETOURT HANDS TERRIERS 1ST LOSS

In one of the spring's biggest high school upsets, Lord Botetourt shocked previously unbeaten William Byrd 10-0 on Wednesday in baseball, knocking the Terriers out of the Blue Ridge District baseball tournament in Low Moor.

The Cavaliers (9-8-1) accomplished this feat without using their top starting pitcher, Billy Arthur. Instead, Gabe Sander shut out Byrd (18-1) on seven hits.

The loss doesn't eliminate the Terriers from further play; they had qualified for next week's Region III tournament as the Blue Ridge District's regular season champion.

Sander struck out four and walked none. He also knocked in three runs with a double and single. Keith Shupe shared offensive honors for the Cavaliers with a single and two-run homer as he also had three RBI.

Rain wiped out the second semifinal game scheduled between Alleghany and Salem. Those teams will play today at 1 p.m. with the winner facing Botetourt at 4 p.m. for the Blue Ridge District's other spot in the Region III tournament.

In other high school sports:

\ SOFTBALL: In Rocky Mount, Cave Spring scored eight runs in its final two at-bats to beat Patrick Henry 8-7 in the championship game of the Roanoke Valley District tournament. The Knights took an 8-4 lead with a five-run sixth inning highlighted by three hits and two Patriots errors.

Patrick Henry got a two-run single from Pam Whiten, then cut its deficit to a run on Erica Carter's run-scoring fielder's choice. Cave Spring pitcher Princess Kemp got a groundout to end the game.

The Knights got three hits from Shannon Smithson and two each from Beth Drombetta, Ellen Jamison and Carrie Molakach. Shelly King homered and Jeanne Likenholler had two hits for Patrick Henry.

Cave Spring reached the final with a 22-2 drubbing of William Fleming. Jamison and Kara Whitney homered in that game.

Patrick Henry beat Franklin County 6-4 in the other semifinal. King hit a home run for the Patriots, and Patti Campbell homered for the Eagles.

Cave Spring and Patrick Henry advance to next week's Northwest Region tournament.

Glenvar's Amy Layman (7-4) and Kim Martin combined on a one-hitter to blank visiting Craig County 15-0 in five innings during the first round of the Pioneer District tournament. The Highlanders, who are 12-7-1 and play Parry McCluer Friday in a semifinal game, had 11 hits and were paced by Amy Maxwell's 3-for-4, four-RBI day.

Kelly Goldthorpe went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Erin Johannes smacked an RBI triple and scored a run as Amherst defeated Liberty 3-2 in a Seminole District tournament semifinal in Pamplin. The Minettes (14-6) had no hits, but used nine walks and two errors by the Lancers (16-4) to score. Amherst will face Rustburg, a 7-2 winner over Jefferson Forest, at 7 p.m. Friday in the championship game.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Glenvar's Nick Varney won his third consecutive Region C singles and doubles championships, and the Highlanders continued their quest for a third consecutive Group A title with an 8-1 victory over Floyd County in a regional final in Wytheville.

Varney, a junior who has won back-to-back state singles and doubles titles, beat Floyd's Frankie Turpin 6-1, 6-0 in singles. He and John Williamson teamed to beat Turpin and John Boyd 6-2, 6-0 in doubles.

In team play, Glenvar (13-0) won all six singles matches to put away the Buffaloes. The Highlanders play in the Group A tournament June 1-2 at Roanoke's Walrond Park.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Grayson County (13-0) won all three singles matches to pull out a 6-3 victory over Fort Chiswell in the Region C final at Radford's Bisset Park.

Each team won three singles matches, then the Blue Devils' tandems of Jessica Sumner/Jenny Reedy, Christie Finn/Catie Satterwhite and Terri Sumner/Kelly Halsey swept the doubles.

Melanie Wexel won the regional singles championship when Sumner could not finish their match because of exhaustion. Wexel won the first set 6-1 and trailed 1-0 in the second set when Sumner retired.

Sherrie Quesenberry and Emily Edwards of Floyd County won the doubles title by beating Grayson County's Reedy and Finn 6-4, 6-3.

The Group A tournament is June 1-2 at Clinch Valley College in Wise.

Radford's Cathy Richardson capped a busy afternoon by winning the Region IV singles championship and teamming with Ashleigh Funk to take the doubles title Tuesday at Radford University's Dedmon Center courts.

Richardson played four matches on the day, including singles and doubles during Radford's 7-2 loss to Marion in the team final. In individual singles play, Richardson rallied from 2-3 in the third set to pull out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Abingdon's Nan Morefield. Richardson and Funk beat Morefield and Emilie Collins 6-4, 6-2 to capture the doubles title.
