NETS COACH CHUCK DALY CALLS IT QUITS

Chuck Daly resigned Thursday as coach of the New Jersey Nets after leading the NBA team to two playoff berths but failing to take them past the first round.

Daly's future had been in doubt since the Nets were eliminated from the playoffs by the New York Knicks on May 6. Daly had one year remaining on a three-year, $4 million coaching contract.

Daly, 63, said he was going to stay with the team for two years, working on broadcasting projects, which will include pregame shows and other ventures.

He also has signed a four-year contract with TBS to serve as a color analyst on what he said would be a Thursday night game of the week for the cable network.

"The bottom line is that after [coaching] 1,475 games at every level, I finally made the decision that it is time to leave the bench," Daly said at a news conference.

Willis Reed, the Nets' general manager, said assistants Brendan Suhr and Paul Silas would be considered for the coaching job.

Daly began his NBA coaching career by posting a 9-32 record in a short stint with Cleveland.

Daly joined the Detroit Pistons in 1983 and spent nine seasons there, winning three Eastern Conference titles, three Central Division titles and the 1989 and 1990 NBA titles. His teams had five consecutive 50-victory seasons and made nine playoff appearances. His 1988-89 team went 63-19 and won the first of Detroit's two league titles. He had a .633 winning percentage with the Pistons.

Daly also guided the U.S. Olympic team to the gold medal in 1992.
