COVINGTON DOWNS BATH

At Covington, the Cougars scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to defeat Bath County 2-1 in the Pioneer District baseball semifinals on Wednesday. Jeff Tucker pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10 to get the win over Bath County's Chris Phillips. John Brewster and Eric Shultz drove in the runs for Covington (14-4-1).

The Cougars play Glenvar at 5 p.m. today against Glenvar for the title. The Highlanders routed Craig County 12-5 in the other semifinal.

In Martinsville, Magna Vista outlasted Fieldale-Collinsville for a 9-8 victory in the Piedmont District semifinals. The Warriors take on Tunstall tonight at Hooker Field for the championship. Both teams are in the Region III tournament starting Monday at Martinsville when William Byrd meets Magna Vista at 5 p.m.

At Pulaski County, rain postponed the Mountain Empire District semifinals until today. Narrows will battle Rocky Gap in the first game at 4 p.m. while Grayson County takes on Shawsville at 7 p.m.

In Hillsville, Carroll County defeated Blacksburg 12-1 in the New River District tournament to run its record to 16-3 while the Indians finish at 4-15. Jason Kilbourne went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI. Brian Hawks drove in three runs while Kenny Ward was 2-for-2. Ward was also the winning pitcher, stretching his record to 9-0 and is tied for the school record of most wins in a season. He had eight strikeouts in six innings.

The other semifinal between Radford and Christiansburg was called in the sixth inning with the Blue Demons leading 4-3. It will be finished today at 4 p.m. The championship game will be played at 5 p.m. in Hillsville.

Thursday's Blue Ridge District tournament semifinal game between Salem and Alleghany was suspended because of rain with Alleghany leading 2-0 in the second inning. The game will resume today at 2 p.m., followed by the championship game at 5 p.m.
