TECH MEN 1ST IN METRO

Virginia Tech has parlayed golf and indoor track titles into its second consecutive Metro Conference all-sports championship.

The Hokies finished with 38 points to edge South Florida (36.5 points) and Virginia Commonwealth (33.5) for the 1993-94 school year. Points are based on the school's finish in each conference sport.

Tech finished with 25.5 points in the women's competition, good for second place behind South Florida (35.5).

In other Metro news, Virginia Tech's Christi Osborne was named the conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women's basketball for '93-94 and Dave Braine was named chairman of the athletic directors' committee for 1994-95.

In other sports in the region:

Virginia catcher Eileen Schmidt has been named a third-team National Softball Coaches Association All-American.

Schmidt, a senior, led the Cavaliers in batting average (.341), RBI (25) and extra-base hits (10). The All-ACC selection set UVa career records in RBI (102) and runs (106).

Virginia outfielder Brian Buchanan has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference's player of the year in Division I baseball. The junior received 14 votes to 11 for runner-up Mark Landers of West Virginia in balloting by ECAC coaches and sports information directors.

Buchanan hit .396 with 22 homers and 66 RBI for the Cavaliers.

Roanoke College freshman Courtney Fitch advanced to Saturday's final round of the high jump at the NCAA Division III track and field championships in Naperville, Ill., by placing in the top 11 of Thursday's opening round.
