HOLTON RESIGNS AS TECHNOLOGY AGENCY LEADER

Former Gov. Linwood Holton will step down this summer after more than five years as head of Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology.

Holton, 70, has overseen the state-funded agency at a time when its mission has shifted from university research to helping small, high-tech companies get off the ground.

He will stay on with the agency until his successor is chosen. Holton then will join Mezzullo & McCandlish, a Richmond law firm that represents business clients.

Holton was the first Republican governor of Virginia in this century. The former Roanoke resident served from 1970 to 1974.
