CYCLISTS HITTING CITY STREETS

An international field of bicycle racers will be vying for $13,700 in cash prizes at the Roanoke Festival in the Park 1994 Memorial Day weekend races.

Participants include recent Tour DuPont contestants Scott Mercier and Brian Walton plus five-time Senior National champion Jonas Carney.

Sunday, racers will compete against the clock to the top of Mill Mountain in the ROC Hillclimb. The course record for the 3.3-kilometer climb is 8 minutes, 42 seconds.

On Monday, the cyclists compete for $11,500 in cash prizes in the Saturn Festival Cup. 150-200 riders in age groups from 13 years and up. The featured class, which includes the top professionals, will start at 2 p.m.

The hillclimb, sponsored by the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center, carries a purse of $2,200.

On Monday, the cyclists hit the streets of downtown Roanoke to compete for $11,500 in cash prizes in the Saturn Festival Cup. Some 250-300 are entered in the event that starts at 8:45 a.m. The 45-lap, 30-mile featured race that includes the pros starts at 12:30 p.m. The race is sponsored by Saturn of Roanoke Valley and co-sponsored by Cardinal Bicycle.

An added incentive for this year's competitors is the Saturn/Cardinal Jackpot, a winner-take-all prize of $500 for the rider with the most points in both races.
